AO3 Userscripts on Mobile Safari
Prepare to step up your AO3 perusing! This is a little tutorial I put together that teaches you how I got AO3 Userscripts
working on Safari Mobile. This is just the way I went about it! I have a dinky Iphone 7+ so if anything is inaccurate DON'T shoot
the messenger. I figure everyone should at least know you can do this now-a-days. I love living in the future!
1. Get This App!
Userscripts Safari
It is an open-source userscript manager for safari!
See github here.
You could stop here and follow the directions in the app but what kinda tutorial would this be!
2. File Finding
Upon opening the app you should see a button:
Change Userscripts Directory.
This will take you to the folder where all your userscripts are housed.
There will be a Demo file in there, you can delete it if you want (it will just get in the way).
Be sure to make note of the name/location of this folder.
Once you know and have set up where your files will go, proceed to your userscript website of choice.
Popular sites include TaperMonkey or Greasyfork.
Search
AO3 and pick your poison!
Click
Install this script and it should take you to a page of code.
3. Downloading Scripts
Note:
Userscripts are third-party JavaScripts that have access to anything on a given web page, can load other JavaScripts, steal your information, and so forth. Never install a userscript you don’t trust.
In the leftmost part of the search bar there is a puzzle piece icon. Click it!
In the drop down menu there will be an option that reads: Userscripts Click Dat!
This pop up is where we will install and also manage our active scripts!
Click on Tap to install, make sure the information is correct and hit Install again.
In the pop up menu, click the folder icon in the top left.
This will list all your current scripts in your file directory. You should see whatever you installed! (and if you take a gander at the script folder it should have a file in it now)
SUCCESS!!! Great job!
4. Working On AO3
Open up AO3-dot-com and go back into the
Userscript pop up.
It will ask for access to the site, click allow (for however long you want).
Toggle the script on or off by clicking the
JS icon.
Refresh your page and depending on what your script is you should see immediate change!!!
5. Customizing Scripts
Some, if not most, of these AO3 scripts rely on editing the code and setting your own phrases, tags, colors, etc. Do not fear!
There are typically comment lines that will tell you exactly where and what to change. You can tackle this in a lot of ways
but if you want to keep all of this on your phone I personally use the app
Koder.
If you open your file in
Koder, you can directly edit it and it will automatically save!
Yippee!!!! Hoorah! Enjoy your ascension into AO3 on iphone godhood!
Note:
If you want to rename, or make your OWN script, when you add it to the folder directly, make sure that it ends with .user.js
